While at POMFLANT, I lived at Huntington Woods across the Ashley River bridge from North Charleston. LCDR Lester Moon lived near me on the same street. He was the OIC of the Missile Assembly Bldg. He was building a retreat north of Charleston. As he was going to the retreat, and while turning from the main highway onto a side road, he was killed in an automobile accident. I don't recall the date that this happened, but I know his family was devastated.
I now live in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley. I left POMFLANT to become a consultant to NASA-HQ for Apollo spacecraft navigation systems Apollo-8 through Apollo-11. Like POMFLANT, Apollo was a fantastic adventure! When we had landed on the Moon, I moved to Virginia to work in robotic factory-automation systems. I also had a career in naval aviation, from flying anti-submarine patrols over 7 seas (via aircraft-carriers and land bases) to finally working at the Naval Air Systems Command-HQ. I retired as Captain, USN. I now am retired from both General Electric engineering and from the air Navy. I teach martial arts (Karate, Aikido and Judo) at Waynesboro; and I spend much time backpacking in the Blue Ridge and Allegheny mountains -and on the Appalachian Trail. My children live within 15 minutes of me; we are together often. My memories of POMFLANT surface almost daily.
I am still working as a Supervisory Federal Investigator, and Carroll is on staff at the St. Andrews Parish United Methodist Church in Charleston. It's so nice that I work from home. If I had to drive to downtown Charleston every day, I would have retired long ago.
Our lives are busy and blessed. We enjoy church, traveling, gardening, fishing, and I still play the guitar. Carroll is teaching me to play golf. He is a man of great patience. I attended the POMFLANT breakfast at IHOP in January, and it was wonderful to see so many familiar faces and to renew friendships. We all still look pretty darn good – considering.
