September 2003 - Issue 2

The POMFLANT Alumni, organized 10 years ago. The yearly Get Togethers are the only time most of us see each other during the year and the newsletters have been providing us with additional information about our members. As you all know, I have taken over the newsletter and Helen Cash has volunteered to help anyone who coordinates our Get Togethers.....Thanks Helen!

News from our Members:

John & Vonceil Mansolf - Hello everyone, I am so glad the monthly newsletter continues, I both enjoy and appreciate the news updates. We have one update for you from our family. I am retiring on 3 May from civil service with 42 years of federal service it is time to relax and enjoy the good life. Vonceil and I are planning to do some traveling. We have trips planned this summer to Pennsylvania and Kansas. We will also be in Charleston in late July for the birth of our latest grand child. Joyce is having her second; we say it's about time! Her first, Julian is 5 years old and can't wait to be a "Big Brother". We also want to take some cruises; Alaska is a long time dream of ours, which we hope to fulfill soon. Keep the newsletters coming!

Bob Weaver - I am still enjoying retirement, but Mother Nature has played some tricks on me since I last trodded the grounds of SWFLANT.  The limp that I developed during my last year of work kept getting worse until the pain finally drove me to see the doctor. After several x-rays and a referral to an orthopedic surgeon, I found out that osteoarthritis has degenerated my left hip to the point that a total hip replacement will be performed later this summer. After recovery from that, I will need cataract surgery for both of my eyes. Aside from being nearly blind and unable to walk, life is good. Ha. Ha. The old saying that "old age is not for sissies" is certainly true. Take care, and tell everyone that I said hello.

Paul and Rachel Fitzgerald - On May 18, 19, 20, Paul Fitzgerald attended a reunion of shipmates from the USS Cubera (SS 347) a submarine on which he served in the 50's. The reunion was held in Virginia Beach, VA. All attendees had a great time. There were shipmates present who served on the Cubera in the 40's, 50's, 60's and even one who was on the decommissioning crew in the 70's. Anyone interested can view photos at: http://www.imagestation.com/album/act/invite.html?album_id=4290081375&referrer=%2Falbum%2F%3Fid%3D4290081375. On 24 May, Paul attended a 50th high school class reunion in Reidsville, NC. Photos of this reunion can be seen at: http://www.imagestation.com/album/act/invite.html?album_id=4290082513&referrer=%2Falbum%2F%3Fid%3D4290082513. Of course Paul had a great time, took all the photos and put them on the above sites. Paul and Rachel are currently in Douglas GA., doing volunteer work at General Coffee State Park: http://www.members.tripod.com/gcstatepark/. A very nice rural park in South Central Georgia.

Ron and Nancy Thomas - We have not received many inputs for this issue of the newsletter. Any inputs can be sent to the below E-Mail address at anytime and will get into the latest newsletter. Nancy and I are doing fine. I will be eligible to retire in about 18 months and am still undecided if I will go then or wait a while longer. Work is not as much fun as it used to be. Nancy is eligible in less that 3 years and I do not know if she is ready to retire or not. She is currently undecided. Take care my friends. My side business, Southeastern Synthetics, will continue to sponsor the website and the newsletter at no cost whatsoever to the Alumni Association. This includes the web, newsletter materials and any applicable postage costs.
